The Legal entity identification (LEI) number is a unique 20-character identifier for a legal entity which trade in financial markets (stocks, bonds, futures, forex, etc.), connecting financial markets, companies and regulators. Issuance of LEI codes is governed by Global Legal Entity Identifier Foundation (GLEIF).

In light of EU regulations, all market participants trading into EU venues will be required to have an LEI. That means Investors must obtain an LEI before trading into ICE Futures Europe markets.

LEI can be used for regulators to oversee financial markets. Every deal conducted in the markets will connect to the other counterpart with an LEI.

An LEI needs annual renewal. This means that an LEI issued on 01.01.2020 will have to be renewed before 01.01.2021. If the deadline has passed, your LEI code will become inactive until renewed again. This renewal process is necessary to ensure the data in the Global LEI Pool is relevant and up to date. LEI Register offers the renewal of LEIs for 1-, 3- or 5-year period.

To register a LEI number, you can visit https://www.gmeiutility.org/ to complete a Self-Registration process. The basic registration fee is $100.00 or €90.00 (Please note that the basic charge for registration/renewal is dependent on the Managing LOU and Legal Address Country). In accordance with the 2014 funding plan for the Global Legal Entity Identifier Foundation (GLEIF), each renewal submission is also subject to a $11.00 or €10.00 per record per year GLEIF Surcharge.
